Mobile-first Indexing in 2020!

Google first announced that they were going to start with mobile-first indexing in March 2018. Later, in March 2020, Google stated that in September 2020, it would enable mobile-first indexing for all websites in Search. Now due to these uncertain times, Google has decided to extend the timeframe to the end of March 2021.

Since more and more organic searches come from mobile devices, Google has decided to prioritise mobile results. Google says that most websites are now ready for this new system, but it would still crawl over the desktop sites occasionally with its traditional Googlebot. This means that the website owners might see increased crawling by Google in the upcoming months, as they will now use two different crawlers: one is the mobile Smartphone user-agent, and the other will look like the Chromium version it uses in the desktop website. However, for the most part, site owners will see the mobile agent.

How to move forward?

If your site is already mobile-friendly, this change probably doesn’t do anything to your rankings. Google will determine how your site will rank based on the contents available on your mobile site. This sounds pretty big, but it will have minimal consequences on sites that have a responsive design. However, if yours is not, you have something to worry about.
